University of Hertfordshire ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 1952 แรกเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักในนาม the Hatfield College of Technology ได้รับการสถาปนามาเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเต็มตัวพร้อมกับชื่อ University of Hertfordshire ในปี ค.ศ. 1992 มหาวิทยาลัยนี้เรียกได้ว่าเป็น modern university ที่มีสภาพแวดล้อมน่าเรียนและมีคุณภาพการศึกษาในระดับที่ดีมากแห่งหนึ่งเลย มหาวิทยาลัยให้ความสำคัญกับนวัตกรรมและเทคโนโลยีในการเรียนการสอนมาก และมีโปรแกรม work placement เพื่อรองรับความต้องการของนักศึกษาในการจะไปต่อในสายอาชีพต่างๆ อีกด้วย
ปัจจุบันมหาวิทยาลัยมีแคมปัสทั้งหมด 2 แคมปัส ซึ่งสามารถรองรับนักศึกษาได้ราวๆ 25,000 คน มีพื้นที่สำหรับกิจกรรมพร้อมอุปกรณ์กีฬามากมายให้นักศึกษาได้ใช้งาน และมหาวิทยาลัยยังได้ลงทุนเป็นมูลค่ากว่า 120 ล้านปอนด์เพื่อปรับปรุงอาคารที่ใช้สำหรับการเรียนการสอนในสาขา Film and Media, Health and Human Sciences รวมถึงได้เปิดอาคารสำหรับ Law School เพื่อสร้างภาพลักษณ์ให้ทันสมัยมากขึ้น ปัจจุบัน University of Hertfordshire ยังมีโครงการพัฒนาในส่วนสำคัญอื่นๆ อย่างเช่นอาคารหอพักนักศึกษาและสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกในแคมปัส ทำให้สภาพแวดล้อมภายในมหาวิทยาลัยนั้นเรียกได้ว่าเป็นมิตรกับนักศึกษามากๆ การันตีได้ด้วยรางวัลที่ 1 จาก the People & Planet Green League หลายปีติดต่อกันตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2007

University of Hertfordshire ตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Hatfield ซึ่งเป็นเมืองใหม่ที่สร้างขึ้นในช่วงหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 มีทำเลตั้งอยู่ตรงกลางระหว่าง Cambridge และ London ปัจจุบันมีประชากรอยู่ประมาณ 30,000 คน ซึ่งถือว่าไม่ได้หนาแน่นมาก ภายในเมืองมีสถานที่เที่ยวให้ชมมากมาย และมีการตั้งตลาดค้าขายกันในเขตเมืองเป็นประจำ
